Government Grows In TN!

This just in:

Across the country, big government has gotten a bit smaller over the past year — but not in Tennessee.

According to an analysis of U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, total employment for all federal, state and local government jobs dropped by 162,800 positions between the midpoints of 2011 and 2012, a decline of 0.7 percent.

Tennessee, however, added 10,800 government jobs, reaching 428,400 government positions. That growth — in both raw and percent change is the second-highest in the country...

EDIT - This post previously mentioned the TN government - all increases were apparently Federal workers, although the BizJournal article did not make that readily apparent.

  1. According to the latest Labor Market Report (June 2012) from the state’s Department of Labor website, the seasonally adjusted labor workforce for the state is 3,110,000. With 251,400 unemployed, that leaves 2,858,600 working. 428,400 of those being government jobs means that 1 in 7 are government jobs (and pensions) that have to be paid for by the other 6.

Combine the 428,400 government workers with the 251,400 unemployed, and you get 679,800 or 21.8% of the available workforce.

  2. Wow Eric that really paints a picture, thanks for the illustration of what this information means.

How does this line up with the official response from the speaker, located here:

Seeking clarity from the wise, thanks!

  3. Well, they are not contradictory (mine vs. the speaker’s), as they are looking at the same data. The speaker is claiming that the state has in fact reduced state funded jobs. I do not disagree. 10,800 government jobs may have been added, they would have to be by local or federal government rather than the state government. I am merely pointing out the number of government jobs in the state vs. the total workforce, because I don’t care WHERE the 10,800 government jobs came from, because all the non-government workers have to pay for their existence.

It is similar to when the dept. of eduction wants to throw a party when they can report a 15% increase in achievement scores (YAY!)….but the you find out the unreported mean score is still just a 45…..but hey, it’s not a 39 any more!
